Hydrotherapy offers a form of rehabilitation and exercise. within a controlled water based environment. AWVP offers hydrotherapy via an underwater treadmill, which enables a dog to use the benefits of water within a secure clinic.

The intended effects of hydrotherapy include:

  • Relief from pain,
  • Relaxation of muscle tension,
  • Increased range of joint motion,
  • Increased muscle mass and strength,
  • Prevention of secondary complications,
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness,
  • Decreased inflammation,
  • Potentially earlier return to normal function,
  • Improved gait pattern,
  • Improved well being,
  • Reduction of frustration for dogs on cage rest,
  • Low impact exercise.

Conditions that benefit from hydrotherapy:

  • Hip / Elbow dysplasia,
  • Cruciate ligament injuries (& post op recovery),
  • Osteoarthritis,
  • Orthopaedic conditions,
  • Recovery from trauma and fractures,
  • Spinal injuries,
  • Luxating Patella,
  • Neurological conditions eg. CDRM and Intervertebral Disc Disease,
  • Obesity - help with weight control and to regain fitness.

The hydrotherapy session:

On initial appointments, a history and assessment will be undertaken with your pet, to assess movement, muscle mass and joint function. If time allows, an introduction to the treadmill will occur with or without water.

Follow up appointments, will entail a chat to establish how your pet was  following the previous session, as well as current health and wellbeing check. Your pet will then be prepared for the treatment session, which will be designed on an individual basis. Length of time in the water and actively walking within the treadmill, will depend on your pet's fitness and functional ability.

Post treatment, you dog will be showered and dried down. Please ensure you have a suitable coat to put on your pet post-session, to prevent your pet getting a chill, especially in the colder months. It is advisable to bring a spare towel for the trip home.
It is advisable to  avoid feeding your pet for approximately 1 hour after treatment.
